Casting Call!  Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat:

The saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. This production will be high energy and bright with innovative projections, costuming and staging.

Audition Dates & Times: Saturday, April 29, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Children age 7 – 12)

Monday, May 1 & Tuesday, May 2, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (Individuals 13 years and older) -please note: Individuals 18 and older will be asked to complete a background check.

Location: Memorial Opera House, 104 Indiana Avenue, Valparaiso, IN 4638

Performance Dates & Times: July 14-30, 2017 (Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m, Sundays at 2:00 p.m.)

Casting:

Casting for up to 32 singers/actors/dancers to fill all the roles in this show, including up to 10 for the children’s chorus. All roles are open to everyone.

Everyone should audition in their age group. For those who look older or younger than their age, we will make sure you are considered for the group you fit in the best for this production. If you play an instrument, bring it with you. There may be a place for actors/singers that play instruments on stage.

Please bring your best song to sing, with sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. (Due to time restraints, you may not get to sing the entire song, so choose your best 16 – 32 bars.) Please dress comfortably for these auditions, as you will be dancing as well. There is no need to dress up for the singing and then change for the dance. Be comfortable and relaxed for the entire audition process.
Rehearsals will begin Monday, May 15.


Character Breakdown


Narrator: Soprano with extended mix/belt range. Vibrant, energetic, charming performer with a superior voice. Movement/dance will be required, but the focus will be on vocal ability. The narrator must be adept to both being the focal point and then blending into the scene. The narrator is onstage almost the entire show.

Vocal Range: B3 – G5.

Joseph: Jacob’s favorite son. Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. Singer/actor. Honest and likable with good intent. Humble but proud and able to transition to the leader of a nation. Must believe in himself and his convictions.

Vocal Range: B2 – G4.

Jacob: Aged patriarch. He overly dotes on Joseph, to the exclusion of his other sons.

Vocal Range: D2 – B3

Joseph’s 11 Brothers: High energy & very active. Singers/dancers/actors/ Need to be able to develop strong unique characters and sing harmony. Able to portray wide range of performance styles. Although acting usually as a group, they each have their own different personalities, talents, and flaws. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places. Conniving, self-centered, and jealous of Joseph’s high aspirations and their father’s favoritism toward Joseph, they change their ways in the end.

Vocal Ranges vary.

Pharaoh (may double as brother): The most powerful man in Egypt. Should be an outgoing, engaging entertainer, able to take the stage and connect with an audience. Singer/actor with good comic timing. Typically done in an Elvis Presley style.

Vocal Range: B2 – G4.

Potiphar (may double as brother): A powerful and rich Egyptian and Joseph’s employer. Comedic timing is a must.

Vocal Range: B2 – G4.

Butler & Baker (may double as brothers): Prisoners with Joseph. These two characters have solos parts and must have comedic timing.

Vocal Range: F2 – G4.

Ensemble: High energy singers/dancers/actors will be needed to fill the chorus. The chorus will be on stage most of the show. A strong ensemble is the backbone of this show. Must be able to learn and sing harmonies and learn and perform different dance styles. These performers will have a great time with costumes that will double as screens for projections. Vocal Ranges vary.

Children’s Chorus: A group of fun kids that will be able to learn and sing harmonies and be on stage for the entire show. Vocal Ranges vary.
